The Erechtheion built between 421 BC and 406 BC is one of the most characteristic architectural monuments of the Acropolis of Athens. This temple was not consecrated to a single divinity, but was divided into three sanctuaries each dedicated to a God: Athena polias, Poseidon and Zeus, as well as housing the tomb of the mythical king Erechtheion struck down by Poseidon.
It is said that the dispute between Athena and Poseidon over the mark of her trident that can be seen on the rock took place in this building. From this dispute we also find a sacred olive tree and a well of salt water delivered by Athena. Something to highlight is the portico of Caryatids, columns in the shape of six women that support the entablature. The originals are no longer in the Erechtheion, all of them are protected from environmental damage in the Acropolis museum and in the British museum in London.
According to the architect Vitruvius, these statues represented the women of Karys and the Peloponnese who were sold into slavery after their people's collaboration with the Persians.
